Lake is a small water body surrounded by land. It may have a river which supplies or drain water from the Lake. There are many types of lakes such as tectonic lakes, volcanic lakes, glacial lakes, etc. Here we represent the list of top 15 deepest lakes in the world.

Lake Baikal

It is a massive lake located in the north of the Mongolian border in Siberia, Russia. It is the largest freshwater lake in the world and has an average depth of 744.4 meters with a volume of 23,615.39 km3. It contains 22-23% of the world’s freshwater. It is also the world’s oldest lake 25-30 million years. It has an area of 31,722 km sq. with 27 islands and it is frozen from January to May. In 1996, it was declared as UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the world’s deepest lake.  

Lake Tanganyika

It is the world’s longest freshwater lake, located in South Africa and shared between four countries Zambia, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania. It is a rift valley lake with an area of 32,900 km sq and its average depth is 570 m with an elevation of 773 m. The volume of the water of this lake is 18,900 km3. Lukuga river is its primary outflow.

Although it is called a sea it is actually a lake which gets its 80% of the water through a river named Volga. It is surrounded by five countries Iran, Russia, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan. The water volume of this lake is 78,200 km3 with an average depth of 211 m. The elevation is 28 m.

It is located in a south pole of cold in Antarctica and is also the largest lake in Antarctica with an average depth of 432 m and the area of this lake is 12,500 km sq. The lake is divided into two deep basins with a ridge. The liquid water depth over the ridge is about 200 m, compared to roughly 400 m deep in the northern basin and 800 m deep in the southern.

It is a lake which has two names, it is called O’Higgins in Chile and San Martin’s Lake in Argentina. It is located near O Higgins glacier and is the deepest lake in America with a maximum depth of 836 m and the surface area is 1,013 km sq. The major inflow is the Meyer river and the major outflow is the Pascua River.

Lake Malawi

This is a rift lake which has a surface area of 29,600 km sq. and a maximum depth of 706 m. It is surrounded by Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania. It is also known as Lake Nyasa. It is the fourth largest freshwater lake in the world, the ninth largest lake in the world by area, and the third-largest and second deepest lake in Africa.

Issyk Kul

It is located near the Tian shan mountains in eastern Kyrgyzstan. It is the tenth-largest lake in the world by volume and has a surface area of 6236 km sq. The maximum depth is 668 meters and the total volume of water is 1,738 km3. The salinity of the water here is approx. 0.6% and surface elevation is 1,607 meters.

The area of this lake is 27,200 km sq. 1,580 km3 is the volume of water in this lake with the surface elevation of 156 meters and it is frozen from November to mid-June. There are over 25 rivers that flow into the lake.

Crater Lake

It is the deepest lake in the USA. It is located in Klamath County in Oregon and 80 miles northwest of the city Medford. The maximum depth is 594 meters and the volume of water is an 18.7 km3. 1883 meter is its surface elevation. There is no inflow or outflow of the river. The water evaporated is later replaced by rainfall every year.

The primary outflow of this lake is the Penten river and the surface area of this lake is 164.1 km sq. The maximum depth of this river is 590 meters. General Carrera Lake

It is actually a lake which is situated at Patagonia and shared by Argentina and Chile. It originated from glaciers and it drains into Pacific oceans through Baker river and it is surrounded by the Andes mountains. It has a surface area of 1,850 km sq and maximum depth is 586 meters. The surface elevation is 217 meters.

It is located in Rushon District of Tajikistan with the surface elevation of 3,263 meters. This lake was formed in 1911 when the river Murghab was blocked by a big landslide due to an earthquake. It has a depth of 505 meters with a surface area of 79.7 km sq. The primary inflow and outflow of this lake is the Murghab river. The volume of water is 16.074 km3.
