There are various kinds of flour used in the kitchen and they all seem similar but they aren’t. All flours are used for cooking or baking or any other purpose in the kitchen. The color of different flours varies on the scale of white to off white. Let’s have a look at different types of flours.

All-purpose Flour

Also known as Maida in Hindi and is used widely in all types of Indian recipes. All-purpose flour is used in making pies, crusts, and also in making of the bread. When a recipe calls for flour, which is unspecified, it is always ‘All-purpose flour’, out of all flours. It is also used as a thickening agent. The white sauce in pasta is prepared with the help of this flour and water.

It is a healthy flour used in preparing Indian bread, where the dough is prepared out of it by mixing a bit of water. Then it is kneaded so that bread can be made out of it. This type of flour is used by all in day-to-day life and is also not harmful to the body.

Bread Flour

We experience the chewy texture in bread. This texture is because of the bread flour, which has a protein content up to 12% – 14% and also has more gluten. When the dough is prepared with this flour it becomes elastic and light. Mostly, the dough is used in the making of yeasted bread.

Cake Flour

It is made out of soft winter wheat. It contains 8% of proteins in it. It is light in color; it has a fine texture. Thus this flour is used in making cakes. It can also be prepared easily in the kitchen with main ingredients like cornstarch and all-purpose flour. It requires a cup of all-purpose flour with 2 tablespoons of cornstarch.

Who doesn’t like to have creamy, light, and more tender pastries? Yes, everyone likes to have them. They are light and tender as they are prepared by using the pastry flour, which has a protein content of 7 – 8%, whereas the all-purpose flour has a content of protein 11%. It bakes chewy cookies and is a good solution for pie crusts.

Oat Flour

One can prepare it at home or buy it from a grocery. The ingredient comprises dried oat which can be ground in a food processor or blender into the fine powder. The outcome is oat flour. Having this flour is beneficial as it has a bag full of nutrients such as copper, biotin, vitamin B1, chromium, iron, and fiber.

Self-rising Flour

It is a mixture of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt, which enables the baked items to rise. Biscuits, cookies, bread, pancakes – all these bakery items call for this flour. It is recommended not to use yeast bread.

These are some flours used by us in our daily life for preparing Indian bread, cookies, or desserts. Flours are directly used in preparing stuff or sometimes dough is prepared.
